Stainless Sheaves

Bear Equipment specializes in custom sheaves in all materials, including stainless steel.

With superior corrosion resistance, 316SS stainless steel is a great material for sheaves in harsh environments.

Production of stainless sheaves is similar to sheaves of other materials, but must be machined at a slightly slower rate than steel to ensure a quality surface finish.

Here are two examples of stainless steel sheave production: Sheave Blank vs Part Off

Sheave Blank Production:

If the diameter of the sheave is larger, then sheave production starts with cutting stainless roundbar into sheave blanks.

Blanks are cut at a length to allow the blank to be held in the lathe and have enough material to machine to the final dimensions.

The sheave blanks are then put into the CNC lathe and machined to final dimensions.

Blanks must be flipped halfway to machine each side properly.

Part Off Production:

If the diameter of the sheave is small enough, the sheave can be machined out of a solid bar and the CNC lathe can part off the sheave from the bar.

Like sheave blank production, the sheave starts with stainless roundbar.

Instead of going to the saw to be cut into blanks, the bar is fed directly into the lathe jaws.

The profile is machined and then the lathe tooling machines all the way through the material (“part off”) for a completed sheave.

There is no need to turn sheave as the lathe can machine both sides.
